The Ningaloo Game Fishing Campout 2018
The Ningaloo Campout is a one of kind competition for charity in remote Western Australia. The location is so remote that there are no facilities and all competitors bring everything from water, fuel to chemical toilets. The location is Point Billie at Ningaloo station which is closest spot on mainland Australia to the continental shelf, this means fish like marlin, sailfish, broadbill swordfish and ruby snapper are excess-able to the smallest of boats and even kayakers. The comp offers a great community of anglers who camp together on 10 acres right in the waters edge of the pristine Ningaloo reef.
This years event saw windy mornings and glassy afternoons. Some braved the windy mornings to catch spangled emperor on poppers but most waited until the conditions favored deep sea deep dropping, trolling for billfish or even Flyfishing.
Each competitor received a jig from our sponsor Abrohlos tackle to try out for the photo comp. there were great pics although many didn’t make it past the sharks. Like Hamon took out the photo comp.
The ASWB best surface catch was won once again by Levi Zimmerle with a 82cm yellowfin tuna on pe3 with an ASWB stickbait.
Luke Hamon skipper of “All Barred up” (barcrusher) successfully tagged 3 black marlin including putting Toby Brooks on to the biggest marlin and biggest wahoo. All Barred up scored the points to win best team overall.
Another great effort came from Darren Clarke who snuck in a special shorebased capture in the last few hours with a spangled emperor on a stickbait.
The greatest capture of the event was David Beard getting the first ever Broadbill swordfish in the events 6 year history. Many have talked about trying for them so it’s great to know they are out there.
